This article traces the recurrence of certain “obstacles” in the work of Paul de Man. My analysis centers on de Man’s essays on Romanticism in order to locate what he describes as a “shift” from “historical reflection” to the “problematics of reading.” De Man’s renewed attempts to describe this shift—and to name the obstacle that occasions it—draw on the very same language he uses in his reading of romantic texts. Focusing on de Man’s reading of Baudelaire and Hölderlin, in particular, (...) I examine the obstacles de Man identifies within the work of these authors, as well as the ways these obstacles disappear and resurface in later essays. Although I maintain de Man never succeeds in actually naming this obstacle, his repeated attempts to confront it attest to the importance—perhaps even the necessity—of stumbling as a constitutive feature of his critical project. The development of modern programmable pacemaker-systems has led to a series of questions which until now have apparently not existed in the treatment of cardiac rhythm disturbances. These questions touch especially on the problem of whether the relation which usually exists between a diagnostic step and its therapeutic consequence, namely its therapeutic relevance, is abolished or at least changed.

Questions about the nature of the relationship between language and extralinguistic cognition are old, but only recently has a new view emerged that allows for the systematic investigation of claims about linguistic structure, based on how it is understood or utilized outside of the language system. Our paper represents a case study for this interaction in the domain of event semantics. We adopt a transparency thesis about the relationship between linguistic structure and extralinguistic cognition, investigating whether different lexico-syntactic structures can (...) differentially recruit the visual causal percept. A prominent analysis of causative verbs like move suggests reference to two distinct events and a causal relationship between them, whereas non-causative verbs like push do not so refer. In our study, we present English speakers with simple scenes that either do or do not support the perception of a causal link, and manipulate (between subjects) a one-sentence instruction for the evaluation of the scene. Preliminary results suggest that competent speakers of English are more likely to judge causative constructions than non-causative constructions as true of a scene where causal features are present in the scene. Implications for a new approach to the investigation of linguistic meanings and future directions are discussed. (shrink)

Nous avons etudie la pensee de Kant et de Fichte pendant l'annee 1793. En ce temps-la naissait un monde nouveau. Le 20 septembre 1792 se livre la celebre bataille de Valmy. Valmy, defaite de la monarchie du point de vue de la strategie, etait d'abord une defaite morale, la ruine d'un monde ethique. A Kant, le plus grand philosophe du XVIIIeme siecle, se posa la question: Qu'est-ce que la Revolution? A Fichte, encore inconnu, la meme question se posa. Leurs reponses (...) bien differentes symbolisent et expriment le sens de la transformation du monde qui s'effectua alors. Fichte se separa de Kant dans la pensee politique et ainsi, alors qu'un monde nouveau s'annoncait, une nouvelle philosophie prit naissance. Ainsi, si Fichte n'est pas le plus grand des philosophes modernes, il est le premier d'entre eux. S'attacher a sa pensee ce n'est pas seulement le comprendre; c'est aussi nous comprendre nous-memes. Après analyse du passage et de son contexte, il est proposé qu’Alexis a écrit une œuvre nationaliste, partisane et critique de Périclès et d’Aspasie, et que le sanctuaire a été fondé, sans l’intervention de prostituées, après une victoire navale, en remerciement à Aphrodite, déesse de la navigation en mer.Alexis, the Prostitutes and Aphrodite in Samos. According to (...) Alexis of Samos, Athenian prostitutes founded a cult of Aphrodite in Samos in 439 BC. A reappraisal of the information and its context leads to the hypothesis that Alexis wrote his Samian Chronicles criticising Perikles and Aspasia, and, therefore, that prostitutes were not involved in founding the cult, which was established after a naval victory and in honor of Aphrodite, goddess of seafaring. Enhancing synchronization among people when synchronization is lacking is believed to improve their social skills, learning processes, and proficiency in musical rhythmic development. Greater synchronization among people can be induced to improve the rhythmic interaction of a system with multiple dancing robots that dance to a drum beat. A series of experiments were conducted to examine the human–human synchrony between persons that participated in musical sessions with robots. In this study, we evaluated: (a) the effect of the number of robots (...) on a subject’s ability to synchronize with an experimenter; (b) the effect of the type of robot synchrony, namely, whether the robots did or did not represent the subject’s rhythm; (c) the effect of an in-sync and out-of-sync robot on a subject’s behavior. We found that: (a) three robots increased the level of synchronization between the subject and experimenter and their enjoyment level; (b) robots may induce greater synchronization between the subject and experimenter by reproducing the rhythms of not only the experimenter but also of the subject compared to when only the experimenter’s rhythms had been reproduced; (c) the robots in-sync had greater influence on the natural rhythm of the subject. The aim of this article is to explore some of the challenges of measuring Christian spiritual development across distinct traditions of Christian spirituality. This presses into questions of what might be universal and what might be particular when it comes to Christian spirituality in how it is understood and practiced. We address the feasibility of a general, ecumenical measure by hearing from representative voices of five traditions of Christian spirituality: African American spirituality, Anglican spirituality, Benedictine spirituality, Pentecostal spirituality, and Reformed (...) spirituality. After noting some of the distinctives of these traditions, we conclude with four strategies for navigating the unity and diversity of Christian spirituality in conceptualizing and measuring Christian formation. Rompant avec la conception traditionnelle du corps comme pure et simple res extensa en interaction avec une âme seule à même de sentir et de vouloir, laphénoménologie (E. Husserl, M. Merleau-Ponty, J. Patoèka, M. Henry, R. Barbaras,...) en déploie une approche vécue, faisant de la chair (Leib, en allemand) le site même de notre rapport sensible et pratique aux étants. Une telle perspective court cependant le risque de ne voir en l'incarnation qu'une condition de possibilité de la manifestation du monde (...) - et donc de passer sous silence la phénoménalké de cette chair vivante elle-même. C'est dans ce contexte qu'une phénoménologie du corps en émoi s'avère indispensable : au contraire du corps percevant et du corps agissant, simples mediums transparents d'une conscience tout entière auprès des choses, le corps ému, en vertu des bouleversements mêmes qui le caractérisent (larmes, rougissements, sudation,...), recouvre une prégnance certaine, et s'impose comme instance propre. En bref : seule l'émotion est somatophanie, c'est-à-dire manifestation du corps en tant que corps. Le présent volume se donne pour dessein d'étudier les différents versants de cette manifestation. Rationals and countable ordinals are important examples of structures with decidable monadic second-order theories. A chain is an expansion of a linear order by monadic predicates. We show that if the monadic second-order theory of a countable chain C is decidable then C has a non-trivial expansion with decidable monadic second-order theory.

This book begins with Derrida's text, based on a lecture he gave in Montreal and is followed by two texts commenting on it. Derrida gives one of his most precise developments on the notion of 'l'événement' (event), that which comes to disturb the course of history and thus escapes the normal ways of being told and understood. His thought on the topic is crucial for future research on literature as testimony, refering to abnormal conditions of experience whose nature exceeds usual (...) narrative norms. This work is on two components of European culture : French West Indian and Black British literature (memory of slavery) and Spanish literature (civil war and refugees camps). Ce volume prolonge les réflexions du séminaire tenu à Montréal, articulé autour de la question " Dire l'événement, est-ce possible ? ". Les contributions de Gad Soussana ("De l'événement depuis la nuit" suivi de "Arriver") et d'Alexis Nouss ("Parole sans voix") tentent d'en prendre la mesure à partir des problématiques de l'origine et du posthume. Mais l'essentiel, en elles, aura été de susciter la réponse de Jacques Derrida : " Une certaine possibilité impossible de dire l'événement ". " Dans ce livre on a eu le souci d'explorer la démarche expérimentale de Bergson. L'ordre suivi a été celui de ses grandes œuvres, l'Essai sur les données immédiates de la conscience, Matière et mémoire, L'Evolution créatrice, Les Deux Sources de la morale et de la religion. L'étude s'est développée suivant la logique bergsonienne comprise comme logique des significations, dont on peut dire métaphoriquement qu'elle respecte l'ordre de la stratégie militaire par exemple dans la position des problèmes, dans l'exploitation des (...) résultats, etc. Par là même s'est effrité pour enfin disparaître le thème du "bergsonisme" comme philosophie musicale et sentimentale. Ce qui frappera le lecteur, c'est l'énergie déployée par Bergson et sa rigueur dans l'examen des faits, comme l'aphasie ou encore la conscience de la liberté. A travers les thèmes bergsoniens on a été surpris de relever - outre les déclarations faites en clair - une opposition décidée et décisive par rapport à Kant, dont Bergson connaissait l'œuvre, d'après cette étude, avec une haute précision. Certaines thèses de Bergson ne se comprennent même que par leur opposition au criticisme. Ce livre a été rédigé dans le souci d'écarter toutes les prétendues contradictions de l'auteur de Matière et mémoire. Le présent exposé doit par lui-même faire justice de toutes les interprétations fondées sur des contradictions et au demeurant il reste vrai de dire avec Bergson que le temps passé à dénoncer des contradictions est en philosophie du temps perdu. On fera des rencontres inattendues dans ce livre. Non seulement Kant, mais aussi Tolstoï, qui semble avoir devancé Bergson. Ici se trace une voie d'interprétation : la pensée de Bergson peut être enrichie par des éclairages nouveaux et précis qui en définiront mieux la grande actualité. " Alexis Philonenko. (shrink)

La philosophie exposée dans cet essai est fondée sur la triple affirmation suivante : le mécanisme est un langage de caractère structural ; le mécanisme est une théorie scientifique, celle de la Mécanique, mais étendu aux systèmes ouverts il est une théorie scientifique en un sens distendu, entretenu par l'effet des parallélismes idéologiques et du voisinage des sciences dans le contexte duquel il a commencé à prendre corps ; enfin, le mécanisme est une philosophie conçue comme un système scientifique. Les (...) difficultés de cette philosophie viennent de ce qu'elle prétend s'identifier aux procédures, aux données et aux résultats des sciences. Le crédit philosophique à faire à la philosophie mécaniciste réside dans son ambition à sauver l'unité de la science et à retrouver l'idée de nécessité. Pour les philosophies de la finitude, ce projet est illusoire. C'est dans une confrontation avec ces philosophies que, peut-être, le projet d'une philosophie mécaniciste soit perdra ses illusions, soit trouvera tout son sens. (shrink)

Ce volume constitue le premier tome de la philosophie du malheur. On a choisi de mettre au fondement la reflexion de Leon Chestov qui se deployait dans l'analyse des grandes pensees, procurant ainsi a celle-ci une certaine ampleur historique. Le malheur de cette fin de siecle consiste en ce qu'oubliant la signification originaire de la philosophie, il se trouve que la reflexion metaphysique, etayee sur des piliers souvent mal definis, l'ontologie d'une part, la phenomenologie de l'autre, s'est bien souvent egaree (...) et qu'une meditation visant les choses morales semble obsolete. Il faut savoir regarder en arriere, relever de leur indignite les reflexions de Fichte, Kant, Luther et bien d'autres. C'est ce que tente ce premier volume sous la guidee de Chestov. (shrink)

L'œuvre de Chestov a [...] consisté dans l'exposé d'émotions, de projets, de discussions, d'écrits vivants dont la valeur critique était l'écume de l'échange des données du sens interne en général, le temps –?donc des idées de la communauté humaine?– et non des sensations. C'était presque déjà une logique du sens, mais pas du tout au sens de Deleuze ou au mien. La seule méthode susceptible de fécondité était la mise à jour des pensées des grands génies qu'on applaudit, mais auxquels (...) on ne passe rien. Par exemple Crime et châtiment de Dostoïevski est le discours de Chestov sur la liberté et la libération?: Chestov s'en va quérir parmi les grands esprits l'opinion vraie accompagnée de raison, si bien que l'étude de la pensée de Dostoïevski est l'étude de la pensée de Chestov et ainsi de suite. Il se forgeait ainsi une pensée en développant celle des autres avec une incroyable précision. Le présent travail est une reproduction critique des grands exposés de Chestov?: Tolstoï, Dostoïevski, et plus tard Nietzsche, Kierkegaard. On n'a donc pas envisagé, par exemple, de restituer toute l'œuvre de Dostoïevski, mais seulement les trois écrits sur la liberté et la libération et la doctrine du malheur –?Les souvenirs de la maison des morts, Crime et châtiment, le Soussol. Par l'expression ile de la verite, Kant designe l'objet de la premiere partie de la logique transcendantale - la logique de la verite ou encore l'Analytique transcendantale. C'est celle-ci que l'on s'est propose de suivre ici. Les resultats ont, apres une etude de la Deduction transcendantale, permis de mieux saisir le principe de la grandeur intensive et surtout de renouveler l'approche de la chose en soi reliee a la methode qui n'est autre que le sujet transcendantal. Et la serie des (...) equivalences nous a conduit a mettre en lumiere les concepts limites de mort et de neant, si negliges par les interpretes. Cette lecture est une aventure qui mene beaucoup plus loin que les acquis de l'oeuvre de Kant. Elle suscitera, esperons-le, au moins des controverses. (shrink)

La langue morte est celle qui est complète. Dans la mesure où elle est complète, elle ne peut plus évoluer, et tout ce qui lui est extérieur dans l’horizon linguistique est le fruit d’une dérivation illogique (ce qui suppose que la dérivation est, du point de vue éthique, une chute originelle – et que, illogique, elle s’oppose au Logos). Il est bien évident que l’idée d’une langue morte est une Idée de la raison, plus proche du mythe que du concept (...) de symbole. La langue vivante est imparfaite, c’est-à-dire mal adaptée au réel – ce qui se marque par un abandon des flexions (flamand, hollandais) –, mais ouverte à la vie conquérante. Il s’agit donc d’un outil rugueux, mais efficace, qui nie les différences. Dans cette détermination, la langue est vivante en tant que moyen de communication par simplification des détails, si bien que le parler tend vers une fondation anthropologique du système linguistique. Cette dualité est-elle une antinomie au sens strict, ou une opposition psychologique? Et comment, en conséquence, organiser le système linguistique général? Les langues mortes pour les langues vivantes et inversement... (shrink)

Ce volume est une contribution a l'ensemble des travaux consacres par l'auteur depuis de longues annees a la pensee transcendantale. Ces essais et etudes couvrent trois decennies - on peut constater l'influence grandissante de l'Ecole de Marbourg (Cohen, Natorp, Cassirer), qui a su reconnaitre le primat de l'idee de methode. Si les termes d'ontologie et de phenomenologie ont ete abandonnes dans la mesure du possible, c'est dans la mesure ou ils ont sombres dans la confusion et l'amalgame, et rendaient inconcevable (...) ce grand tournant dans la conscience europeenne que furent les doctrines de Kant et de Fichte. La grande difficulté du spinozisme est à rechercher dans le langage. Il y a au moins partout deux langages, l'un philosophique que l'on emploie rarement, et l'autre propre à la langue vulgaire. Nous pourrissons le spéculatif par le vulgaire et nous rendons impie la langue commune par l'intrusion du spéculatif. Comment gouverner le démon du langage? Ce qu'il faut en tout premier lieu discerner, c'est la qualité intime qui confère au langage la possibilité de tromper. Si l'on songe, de plus, (...) que le langage est le lien indéfectible de la communauté humaine, on verra son étude se relier aux synthèses principielles de la politique saisie à l'intérieur de l'encyclopédie spinoziste. À cela s'ajoute la liaison à l'erreur. Un blasphème n'est pas seulement une faute, c'est aussi une erreur, et la théorie de l'erreur est la refondation du système spinoziste capable de chasser l'erreur de partout, et donc de l'Éthique tout entière. Spinoza, pas plus que Fichte, n'acceptera la disjonction du faire (Tun) et du dire (Sagen) –?la morale est enracinée dans la linguistique, et naturellement la théorie de la vérité conforte ces alliances. La bonne lecture doit passer de la langue à la parole comme a priori signifiant, à Dieu comme réflexion absolue, et aussi bien de la conscience d'obstacle comme immédiateté à la conscience de soi. J'obtiens donc une synthèse quintuple. La. Conscience de soi (1) détermine la conscience d'objet (2) et le silence humain (3) est déterminé pas le silence divin (4). La conscience philosophique et son discours occupe le centre (5), et d'étage en étage, on s'élève à la science comme éducation. (shrink)

En l’absence de temps mécanique, il est cependant possible de définir un temps d’origine thermodynamique. Je montre en quoi cette dissociation du temps mécanique et du temps thermodynamique, fait écho à l’ambivalence (...) — qui est au cœur de la physique comme de la philosophie — entre le devenir et le temps comme mesure du changement. Être vu, nu, par un chat ; essayer de savoir quel effet cela fait d’être une chauve-souris ; penser les modes de cohabitation et de compagnonnage que nous formons avec les animaux, en dépit de toutes les violences que nous leur faisons subir, constituent autant d’expériences de pensée limites qui ont ponctué le discours philosophique sur l’animalité au xxe siècle. Il n’est pas étonnant que Cora Diamond fasse un cas de toutes ces expériences : ce qu’elle nomme « une difficulté (...) de la réalité », c’est-à-dire un point d’achoppement entre la pensée et ce qu’elle essaye de saisir, le réel, qui est susceptible de nous faire perdre nos concepts. Je me propose dans ce texte d’explorer les voies de cette difficulté, qui sont souvent des voies contournées ou des déviations. L’idée est aussi de réfléchir aux moyens dont la philosophie dispose pour affronter cette difficulté, sans dénégation et sans déviation. (shrink)

Vraagt onze samenleving om een nieuwe politieke formule, om met Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) te spreken? Op het eerste gezicht niet. De democratie is stevig verankerd in de Grondwet en verdragen en is ingebed in de rechtsstaat, en zowel democratie als rechtsstaat maken deel uit van ons collectieve bewustzijn. Toch is er wat aan de hand in de verhouding tussen overheid, samenleving en individu, zoals de inmiddels structurele onvrede met het publieke domein laat zien. Dat vraagt om een richtinggevende (...) doordenking van de vooronderstellingen van ons democratisch bestel en de fundamenten waarop het berust. Dat is wat dit boek zich ten doel stelt. Het biedt toekomstgerichte ideeën voor ons publieke domein aan de hand van kernbegrippen als legitimiteit, staat, politiek, instituties, identiteit, burgerschap, kerk en theologie. Het gedachtegoed van Tocqueville, die geldt als een van de grootste en meest interessante denkers over de moderne democratie, de democratische samenleving en de democratische mens, vormt daarvoor de inspiratiebron. Behr (Washington, DC: Catholic University of America Press, 2019), ix + 259 pp.The status of Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum as the origin point of what has come to be called Catholic Social (...) Teaching (CST), or Catholic social doctrine, has been reinforced on the magisterial level by the commemorations of the encyclical by Pius XI, Paul VI, and John Paul II. It should be noted, then, that the tradition of CST is comparatively recent. Indeed, it is nearly coextensive with the twentieth-century. Nevertheless, this short tradition already calls for a ressourcement. As Russell Hittinger has pointed out, reflections on CST often move swiftly to the particulars of social issues without an adequate grasp even of its basic concepts: subsidiarity, solidarity, the common good, and the dignity of the person. Further, historical [End Page 1101] developments have had dramatic impact upon the ways in which these principles have been received and developed in the course of this young tradition.In his book Social Justice and Subsidiarity: Luigi Taparelli and the Origins of Modern Catholic Social Thought, Thomas C. Behr provides a major contribution to just such a ressourcement. He does this by presenting an introduction to the thought of the Jesuit scholar whose revival of Thomistic thought in a modern register formed the basis for Leonine social teaching. As Behr explains, Taparelli has remained a somewhat hidden figure in accounts of the genesis and development of CST. He goes unmentioned in the major social encyclicals of Leo and Pius, despite the fact that Leo himself was Taparelli's student. Because of his rhetorically and philosophically potent critique of Enlightenment thought and its effect on mid-nineteenth-century Europe, available to a popular audience through his frequent contributions to the Jesuit periodical La Civiltà Cattolica, Taparelli's name carried baggage for a Church that sought to move beyond the posture of reaction to liberal political orders.However, as Behr shows in the introduction, Taparelli hardly rejected the methods and insights of modern political thought tout court. Behr describes Taparelli's system as a "realist social science." This terminology speaks to the promise which Taparelli found in the sociological analysis of Montesquieu in particular. Though Taparelli judged that Montesquieu held a questionable preference for a republican political form, he greatly admired Montesquieu's ability to, as Behr puts it, "bring political theory into relationship with social theory and historical contingency" (8). Though Taparelli was not familiar with the work of Alexis De Tocqueville, Behr also notes the resonances between Taparelli's work and Tocqueville's political sociology and defense of "intermediary institutions." Yet Taparelli makes up for what the sociological approaches of Montesquieu and Tocqueville lack in the way of natural, teleological principles of politics. Behr alerts the reader from the very beginning of his work that, in approaching Taparelli, he will not find a simple recapitulation of Thomas, but rather a creative approach to political thought which aims to set what is worthy in the modern empirical methodologies on firmer foundations through the recovery of Thomistic-Aristotelian principles.In chapter 1, "Taparelli and the Age of Ideology," Behr situates Taparelli within the political conflicts of the early nineteenth century. Behr sets the scene for Taparelli's renovated Scholasticism by explaining the opposition between Catholic traditionalism (represented especially by Joseph De Maistre and Donoso Cortés) and Catholic liberalism (represented especially by Henri Dominique Lacordaire and his more radical associate Felicité de Lammenais). In this article I try to refute the so-called "libertarian" theory of free will, and to examine how our conclusion ought to modify our common attitudes of praise and blame. In attacking the libertarian view, I shall try to show that it cannot be consistently stated. That is, my dscussion will be an "analytic-philosophic" one. I shall neglect what I think is in practice an equally powerful method of attack on the libertarian: a challenge to state his theory in such (...) a way that it will fit in the modern biology and psychology, which are becoming increasingly physicalistic. The field of neuroimaging has reached a watershed. Brain imaging research has been the source of many advances in cognitive neuroscience and cognitive science over the last decade, but recent critiques and emerging trends are raising foundational issues of methodology, measurement, and theory. Indeed, concerns over interpretation of brain maps have created serious controversies in social neuroscience, and, more important, point to a larger set of issues that lie at the heart of the entire brain mapping enterprise. Many philosophers would, in theory, agree that the methods and tools of philosophy ought to be supplemented by those of other academic disciplines. In practice, however, the sociological data suggest that most philosophers fail to engage or collaborate with other academics, and this article argues that this is problematic for philosophy as a discipline. In relation to the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, the article highlights how experimental philosophers can benefit the field, but only insofar as they draw from the distinctive (...) methods of philosophy and overcome the charge of “amateur psychology” by more consistently collaborating with the scientists they seek to emulate. It concludes that philosophers ought to collaborate with other academics in order to gain an experience‐based understanding of the methods of other disciplines in addition to an understanding of the content of these disciplines. L’interactivité est communément perçue comme la marque caractéristique des technologies digitales et, par extension, de différentes formes de fictions, de médias ou d’œuvres numériques – de la littérature hypertextuelle et des jeux vidéo au net art. On peut toutefois s’interroger sur le sens précis qu’il convient de donner à cette notion, ainsi que sur les promesses auxquelles elle est souvent associée. À défaut de pouvoir cerner un concept unique et maxi-englobant d’interactivité, nous suggérons qu’il est plus profitable de tenter d’identifier (...) des types et des degrés d’interactivité. Nous tentons de montrer pourquoi cette théorie pluraliste et gradualiste est plus attrayante que d’autres approches développées dans la littérature récente. Nous mettons enfin cette conception à l’épreuve du jeu vidéo, en montrant qu’elle permet de réévaluer le rôle que joue l’interactivité dans ce médium, mais qu’elle met aussi au jour les limitations inhérentes des fictions interactives que l’on y trouve.
